What is Minimally Invasive Surgery?
The meaning of “minimally invasive” has changed throughout the years. Today, Dr. Keenen performs Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) which leaves the strong muscle fiber intact with the spine. MIS uses a smaller incision as well. Dr. Keenen has studied with national experts on MIS techniques. Our practice advocates the use of MIS whenever possible. However, only a consultation regarding your specific case will be able to reveal whether MIS is appropriate for you.
The surgical approach involves the surgeon’s decision to make one incision or two incisions and to approach the surgery from the posterior (back), anterior (front side), or lateral (flank side). These options differ and can affect the level of invasiveness and recovery time. Dr. Keenen, recognized as one of the best spine surgeons in Portland, makes these choices based on the type and location of your specific problem.
Before and After Surgery
Before surgery, Dr. Keenen believes in exercise therapy to stretch and strengthen the body. This is called pre-habilitation. In addition to rehabilitation after surgery, these processes can speed up recovery time and contribute to the long-term outcomes of surgery.
